In parallel with the launch of our new video hosting service, based on AWS Elemental, we took the opportunity to integrate a new video player for the web playback.

1. Video.JS

We’ve decided to  opt for the open-source Video.JS player, built with HTML5, JavaScript and CSS 3.  This is the most used video player in the world, it runs on over 400,000 websites  and has more than 15,000 stars on Github.

Video.JS supports playback on desktops and mobile devices. The player is fully skinnable and can be customized with your own skins.

It’s embedded with native plugins for adaptive streaming support, using HLS and Dash.

2. New features

The redesign of our video player allowed us to provide hollywood-graded DRM support, such as Widevine, PlayReady and FairPlay. By leveraging AWS Media Convert, Kinow now offers an end-to-end advanced DRM protection to its customers (from transcoding to web playback).

Thanks to HEVC (H265) codec support, you can now offer 4K (UHD/HDR) playback to your customers by using Dash container.

Some other innovative features have been added, such as multi audio tracks support,  viewing in 3D and virtual reality (VR).

Finally, the  player now offers video streaming by using Chromecast and Airplay, making it possible to use the potential of smart-TV running on Android TV and Apple TV.
